we made peanut butter bird feeders. i did some research. it won't kill the birds. but it may give them the runs.

li'l tot found a pine cone in our yard a couple days ago. and she requested to make a bird feeder with peanut butter and bird seeds. idk how she knew to make one with those ingredients because i had to google it.

i found one blog that was like "spread on the peanut butter and roll it in seeds" and i was all like "psh - i can totally do that." but then one of the commenters said that it would kill the birds. well folks. i certainly don't want any dead birds sprawled across my yard. so i did a bit of research.

and it's ok to use peanut butter. i found a couple sites that suggested mixing it with cornmeal to minimize the stickiness. and a couple others suggested mixing it with margarine. um. i did both. because what's gonna work? teamwork.

so with mixture in hand, li'l tot went to town with her pine cone. she used a spatula to spread the peanut butter and then she rolled the pine cone in bird seed. viciously. which pretty much sprayed bird seed everywhere.

baby, on the other hand, didn't care much for the bird seed (at first). instead. she used a different spatula and spread the peanut butter on her arms. then she tried to lick it.

and me. well. i found some pine cones and played, too. (i won't tell you what i coated in peanut butter.) and after all that fun, i got the ladder out from the garage, carried it to the backyard, and hung the pine cones on our tree.

hopefully, we'll spot a bird or two. pretty birds, that is. not the ginormous vultures that have been feeding off the dead fish (thanks to the cold snap) from the lake in my backyard. i mean. what do you say when your toddler asks you what happened to the fish's eyes? other than, "well. they're very nutritious which is why the vultures ate them. plus. they're easy to pick out."

yay nature!

I'm kinda hungry now...also, put a little pepto in the birdbath and that will combat the runs...

What a great idea. I wonder if I could get my 11 and 15 year old to make something like that. I am just a little leary about the whole having the runs from it. It's hard enough picking up after 2 labs.

I mix cornmeal and peanut butter and put it in recycled aluminum pie pans...my birds love it! Your vulture story reminds me of the time I was in awe of the beautiful hawk sitting on my deck railing. As I was admiring his beauty and photographing him....he suddenly swooped and snagged a little finch, leaving a trail of blood on my deck!!! I guess all God's creatures gotta eat ;-)...............do they have to do it on my deck??????

When my daughter was in 4th grade we took her Girl Scout troop for a weekend in the mountains and that was one of our activities. We hung them in the trees in front of the cabin. Not 5 seconds later the trees were ambushed by commando squirrels that managed to unhang the feeders and runaway with them. The ones that couldn't get them undone, ate them right there in front of us. I have to say it was really freaky.

I would love to try this. However, as I live on a farm with multitudes of cow patties, the fly ratio is like 945,682 flies to 1 person. I'm fairly certain peanut butter pinecone bird feeders would end up being peanut butter pinecone fly cemeteries.

Maybe they'd stay out of my house then...hmmm...

fancy genius idea.

Great idea. Kids love it when we do fun things with them.

Thanks for stopping by my blog recently. I'm slow in getting back to ya, but it's always nice to meet new friends.

We made this but with crackers as a base. It rained. The crackers got soggy and fell to the ground. The squirrels were like "thank you!" and the birds were like "what the?!?!?!" and I was all well "you snooze you lose". So maybe we will try pine cones this time.
